Background

Meieki Area of NagoyaMeieki is the name of the area around Nagoya Station and is comprised of Nakamura-ku and Nishi-ku. It is home to the main business streets, shopping streets and underground malls in Nagoya. In recent years, there has been a great deal of redevelopment work on the buildings in the area, and it continues to evolve day by day. The name “Meieki” was assigned when the October 1977 address revision was implemented.

Meieki is especially accessible—as little as 28 minutes from the Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) by the Meitetsu Airport Limited Express “μ-Sky.” If you arrive by Shinkansen, you’ll already be in Meieki when you get off the train! It is also home to the major area station on the Meitetsu, Kintetsu and subway lines. Additionally, plans are currently underway for construction of the much-awaited Chuo Shinkansen Line, which will cut the trip between Tokyo and Osaka down to an hour.

There are several department stores in the area, including Meitetsu Department Store, Kintetsu Department Store and JR Nagoya Takashimaya, and the office, hotel and commercial facilities form a forest of skyscrapers. Almost synonymous with Nagoya is the network of underground malls, which offers a place to enjoy Meieki no matter what the weather is like outside.

Meieki is the place to go in Nagoya. This website provides detailed information on the area, which is full of shopping, gourmet and tourist attractions.
